Captain Easy Sunday Pages
by Roy Crane
Roy Crane is hailed as one of the founding fathers of the American adventure comic strip. His Wash Tubbs inspired generations of strip cartoonists, among them adventure strip master Milton Caniff.
Many fans of newspaper comic strips know Crane's daily work. Less known are his fantastic Sunday pages, which featured separate storylines starring tough-as-nails adventurer Captain Easy. Designed to fill a full newspaper page, the Captain Easy Sundays allowed Crane's imagination and design sense to run riot. Exotic locales, rock-em-sock-em stories, and lots of beautiful women poured from the giant panels.
At long last these lively Sunday strips are back in print. Fantagraphics has just released a big (10-1/2"x14-3/4") hardcover book reproducing two years' worth of pages in full color. If you haven't seen Crane's color work before, you're in for a treat!
